For the average citizen in a Western democracy, the United Nations still carries an aura of sacred neutrality.
We are taught from childhood that the glass tower in Manhattan represents humanity’s higher conscience—a grand assembly where dispassionate diplomats gather to prevent catastrophic wars, defend universal human rights, and hold dictators to account. When a UN commission issues a report or the General Assembly passes a resolution, news anchors lower their voices to a tone of solemn reverence. The stamp of the UN is treated as the objective voice of the international community.
It is one of the most successful public relations illusions of the modern era.
In reality, the United Nations is not a global high court of ethics. It is a political marketplace. And because it operates as a democratic assembly of sovereign states—where the vote of a hereditary gulf theocracy or a totalitarian dictatorship carries the exact same mathematical weight as that of an open democracy—the institution has been systematically captured by an automatic, illiberal voting majority.
Nowhere is this moral distortion more absolute, absurd, and obsessive than in its posture toward the single Jewish state on earth.
The Arithmetic of Capture
To understand why the UN acts as it does, you have to look past the soaring rhetoric about universal peace and examine the brutal mechanics of numbers.
The United Nations General Assembly comprises 193 member states. Of those:
Over fifty belong to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), forming a cohesive, permanent voting bloc on Middle Eastern affairs.
Roughly 120 nations comprise the Non-Aligned Movement, historically aligned with Soviet, post-colonial, or anti-Western geopolitical agendas.
According to independent democracy watchdogs, fewer than half of the governments seated in that grand assembly can be classified as fully free democracies.
The UN is not dominated by the values of liberal democracy; it is numerically dominated by authoritarian regimes, monarchies, and military juntas.
These regimes do not attend the UN to subject their own records to scrutiny. They attend to form transactional coalitions. And for decades, the most convenient, risk-free diplomatic currency on the floor of the General Assembly has been the scapegoating of Israel.
Denouncing Jerusalem costs a dictator nothing. It satisfies domestic radicalism, placates religious hardliners, and costs zero diplomatic capital with allies, all while directing the global human rights spotlight away from their own domestic torture chambers, forced labour camps, and silenced dissidents.
The Disproportionate Ledger
If you want to know whether an institution is a dispassionate observer or a captured tribunal, you look at its ledger.
Between 2015 and 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted 140 condemnatory resolutions against Israel. In that exact same period, it adopted a combined total of 68 resolutions against the entire rest of the world.
Think about the sheer scale of that arithmetic:
More condemnations than Syria, where a tyrant slaughtered half a million of his own citizens and displaced twelve million more with chemical weapons and barrel bombs.
More than Iran, where women are beaten to death in custody for exposing their hair and political dissidents are hung from cranes in public squares.
More than North Korea, which operates a nationwide network of hereditary concentration camps.
More than Russia, which launched the bloodiest war of imperial conquest on the European continent since 1945.
More than China, which rounded up over a million Uyghur Muslims into re-education camps, sterilised women, and systematically attempted to erase a people’s culture.
China, Cuba, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia regularly manage to escape single-session condemnations entirely. Meanwhile, the only country in the Middle East with an independent judiciary, free elections, a free press, and a thriving Arab-Israeli parliamentary presence receives twice as many resolutions as every rogue regime on the planet combined.
This is not human rights advocacy. It is a multilateral obsession. It is the diplomatic equivalent of a lynch mob cloaking itself in the prestige of international law.
Agenda Item 7: The Institutionalised Witch Hunt
The hypocrisy is not confined to symbolic resolutions in the General Assembly; it is hard-coded into the bureaucratic machinery of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
The Council operates with ten standing agenda items that govern every session it conducts.
Items 1 through 6 cover organisational business, technical cooperation, and universal themes.
Item 8 covers follow-up to international declarations.
Items 9 and 10 address racism and technical assistance.
Item 4 is the general bucket for “Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention”—meaning every country on earth, from Russia and Sudan to Venezuela and Myanmar, is grouped together under a single, generic category.
Except for one.
Agenda Item 7 is titled exclusively: “Human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.”
Israel is the only nation out of 193 member states that has a dedicated, permanent agenda item mandating that its conduct be formally investigated, debated, and condemned at every single meeting of the Council, forever.
Even if peace were signed tomorrow and all disputes settled, the Council’s bylaws require Item 7 to be debated. The Council has had regimes like China, Cuba, Eritrea, and Somalia sitting on its rotating membership board, voting to audit the democratic state of Israel under an item engineered to produce a permanent guilty verdict.
The Moral Laundromat
The most dangerous consequence of this systemic capture is that it acts as a moral laundromat for Western activists.
When an anti-Israel activist on a European university campus or a cable news segment wants to justify their hostility, they do not cite Hamas press releases. They cite the United Nations. They point to the resolutions, the rapporteurs, and the council statements, treating them as ironclad proof that Israel is uniquely criminal.
They never mention—and often do not even understand—that those reports are produced by a system structurally designed by authoritarian voting blocs to ensure that exact conclusion.
The United Nations was conceived in the ashes of the Holocaust with an explicit moral vow: that sovereign nations would never again stand by in silent indifference while a people were singled out for destruction. Eighty years later, the institution has completed a tragic, grotesque circle. Its halls are now the primary global megaphone used to single out, delegitimise, and disarm the Jewish homeland in front of a cheering assembly of despots.
The world needs to stop treating the United Nations as an infallible oracle. It is time to see the institution for what the numbers prove it has become: an international stage where the world’s worst tyrannies gather to project their sins onto the only nation that refuses to bow to them.
